Department of Industry—Water is Australia's largest water monitoring agency. Over 5, monitoring stations measure the quality and quantity of water in rivers, streams, groundwater and dams across New South Wales. About of these stations continuously monitor water sources delivering real-time data through digital electronic technology.

You can view real-time data from the department and other NSW agencies on the Real-time data website. The information is a critical component of the state's flood warning systems. The plan lists all the water information needs in the state and outlines the current data inventory and monitoring programs used to report on and manage water in New South Wales. The plan also reports gaps in data and systems relative to the data delivery requirements of the bureau.

Below Dubbo, the valley mainly comprises flat alluvial plains with elevations less than metres. Macquarie-Bogan catchment is 74, square kilometres. The headwaters of the Macquarie River originate in the Great Dividing Range south of Bathurst, with the river flowing north-westerly until it joins the Barwon River near Brewarrina.

Near Warren, a series of effluent creeks break away from the Macquarie River, connecting with the Bogan River. The department monitors the conditions of river systems in NSW and provides regular updates on water levels, rainfall, water temperature and electrical conductivity. Burrendong Dam, located on the Macquarie River, is the largest storage in the catchment with a capacity of 1, megalitres.

It provides storage for irrigation, town water, stock and domestic use. Windemere Dam —megalitres, provides town water, as well as water for irrigators and other water users. In addition, there are a number of smaller dams within the catchment area providing town water supplies.

The Macquarie-Bogan catchment supports a range of water users including local councils, water utilities, dryland agriculture, livestock grazing and some irrigated agriculture, such as cotton. Sharing water fairly between competing water users and the environment within the extraction limits set by the Murray-Darling Basin Cap is a key water management issue.

Water sharing plans seek to address this issue by setting long-term rules on how water can be accessed, used and traded. A reduction in the frequency, size and duration of flows to the Macquarie Marshes and the diversion of floodwaters within the marshes are key water management issues. The NSW Office of Water has audited floodwater diversion structures in the marshes to better understand impacts on water flows.

Some structures will be rehabilitated to ensure environmental water releases and floodwaters reach key environmental assets. The alteration of natural river flows through the construction of dams and weirs, and erosion from land clearing affect riverine health and contribute to water quality problems, such as salinity.

When fully flooded the marsh area covers more thanhectares and is one of the most important colonial nesting waterbird breeding sites in Australia. To preserve water resources in river and groundwater systems for the long term it is critical to balance the competing needs of the environment and water users.

Water sharing plans establish rules for sharing water between the environmental needs of the river or aquifer and water users, and also between different types of water use such as town supply, rural domestic supply, stock watering, industry and irrigation. Cordeaux Dam.The Darling River is the longest river in Australia and flows for about 2, kilometres from its upper catchment in the Great Dividing Range to its junction with the Murray River in south-western NSW.

This information focuses on the unregulated section of the catchment comprising the Barwon and Darling Rivers upstream of the Menindee Lakes. The NSW catchment upstream of Menindee is approximatelysquare kilometres, or aroundsquare kilometres if excluding the major tributaries. The major township and mining centre of Broken Hill is also in the catchment. Downstream of the Culgoa junction the river becomes the Darling.

The Warrego and Paroo Rivers are the only significant tributaries that join the Darling River downstream of Bourke, and these flow into the river only during major flooding. Downstream of Wilcannia the Darling River flows into the Menindee Lakes Scheme, a series of seven large, shallow lakes that have been modified for water storage. Barwon-Darling

While there are a number of major headwater storages in its tributaries, including the Border Rivers, Gwydir, Namoi, and Macquarie catchments, these dams are too far upstream to regulate flow in the Barwon-Darling River. There are many weirs, however, in the Barwon-Darling that have a major influence on water quality and water supply for users along the river. Water users along the Barwon-Darling rely on the river for town water supply, livestock grazing, and irrigated agriculture including cotton, citrus, grapes, and vegetables.

The cotton and citrus industries in the catchment are significant users. NSW and Queensland manage the catchment's cross border systems. Sharing water resources between the states and supply consumptive and environmental needs are a key water management issues.

Parts of the Barwon-Darling catchment were in severe drought from to River flows during this time reached record lows and extraordinary water sharing arrangements were implemented to secure water supplies for towns and critical water-dependent industries. Securing enough water for critical human needs during drought, while protecting riverine health is a key challenge. In contrast the first few months inand saw major flood flows enter the system.
