So the Iraqi oilfield officials were forced to halt production since they were not given the heads-up that Petronas employees would be evacuated, the officials said, adding they were working to resume the production process on Wednesday.

The coronavirus outbreak is already upending the way companies —including oil companies — work, as they try to protect employees in the global pandemic.

Large oil companies in the United States have asked their office employees to work from home and instituted health checks for those who cannot work from home. Exxon, BP, Kinder Morgan, and Shell were among the companies that asked their office staff to start working from home as of Monday and introduced health checks for workers at production sites. Iraq, which relies on oil revenues for 95 percent of its budgetary income, is one of the least diversified economies in the Middle East.

The oil price crash will likely force heavily oil-dependent Iraq to suspend new infrastructure and energy projects.Wholly owned by the Government of Malaysia, the corporation is vested with the entire oil and gas resources in Malaysia and is entrusted with the responsibility of developing and adding value to these resources. The group is engaged in a wide spectrum of petroleum activities, including upstream exploration and production of oil and gas to downstream oil refining ; marketing and distribution of petroleum products ; trading; gas processing and liquefaction ; gas transmission pipeline network operations; marketing of liquefied natural gas ; petrochemical manufacturing and marketing; shipping; automotive engineering ; and property investment.

Taib believed in the sharing of oil royalties between the state and the federal government. During the time, the oil mining activities in Sarawak were still under exclusive control of Shell.

Taib Mahmud initially suggested to allow independent contractors to market government oil. A government hydrocarbon committee was later set up. Taib Mahmud visited Indonesia and had a discussion with Pertamina Indonesian state owned oil and gas company.

Taib suggested that Malaysia to scrap the concession system and replace it with production sharing agreement. However, there was no laws that allow Malaysia to take back the concessions without paying compensations to foreign oil companies.
